Throughout GNHLUG's life there's be an active voice against membership fees. The reasons voiced have been:
- We don't need membership fees.
- It would create a barrier-to-entry in the group. -- BenScott - 08 Aug 2007
- We're "more real" if we're all volunteers.
- Money corrupts and makes people think funny.
- It costs money to handle money.
- We haven't had a need for serious money (yet). -- BenScott - 08 Aug 2007
- We are family....do you charge your family?
- Yes, if the kid uses the car, he pays for gas! -- TedRoche - 08 Aug 2007
In general, this has also applied to all of
GNHLUG.OurChapters too.

I'd suggest we separate the ideas of paying dues from the ideas of what you can and cannot participate in:
- Meetings are open to the public, no fee is charged.
- Participating in GNHLUG activities should be Open and Free (as in speech) to all
- People who want to be affiliated with ("members") of GNHLUG should feel free to do so
On the other hand, if there are operations that do involve money (buying booth space, making posters and banners), it would be good to have a parallel organization that could manage the money. We haven't worked out the details of how that is going to work, but it seems to be a reasonably good guideline that "the people who provide the money get a say in how it is spent." Devils are in the details, of course.

I'm going to take this to the
OrgList, since I think Ted, Bruce, and I are the only people who read this part of the web site. :) Once I do that, I'll post a link here, to the thread in the archive.
